about

As part of the Moving Loudspeakers residency program at the Institute for Computer Music and Sound Technology at the Zurich University of the Arts, utrumque did an artists' talk followed by a performance on the 19th of September in 2023. It represented a mid-point in the year-long residency process where a new type of moving loudspeaker was developed and explored together with Peter Färber of ICST.

The residency culminates in a premiere performance and subsequent installation exhibition week in the Aktionsraum at ZHdK on the 10th of February 2024. More information about the concert and exhibition can be found at ICST: www.zhdk.ch/veranstaltung/52709

The two tracks are recorded using a binaural microphone and are therefore especially suited for headphone listening. The moving loudspeaker is rotating on the end of a seven meter long arm that in turn also rotates. Both rotating joints are driven by computer controlled motors and the movements of the whole construction correspond to features extracted in real-time from the music. All sounds are produced using acoustic feedback in the room, using stationary microphones that pick up the sounds from the moving speaker. As the character of the feedback changes as the speaker moves, the resulting sounds change as a consequence, which in turn changes the audio analysis resulting in a change in the position of the speaker. Thus, there are several layers of feedback involved resulting in a highly complex and sensitive instrument.
